Saffron in cakes, a Swedish luxury ingredient

Saffron, a Swedish luxury ingredient

In stores in Sweden, ordinary saffron costs approximately 20 SEK for half a gram, which translates into a kilo price of about 40,000 SEK. This makes Saffron by far the most expensive spice in our shops.

In order to produce one kilogram of saffron, it would take approximately 170,000 saffron crocuses. The saffron itself is obtained from the pistil marks of the flower.

Saffron has been cultivated in Southern Europe and the Middle East since a long time.

In Sweden, the spice is probably first mentioned from around the year 1300 and maybe brought here by the Vikings.

Now it is loved by everyone and the kind of cakes baked with it know no end to variations. We have Saffron buns of various formats, the famous Lussebulle, krisps and foods. All beautiful yellow and tasty.
